On March 29, Tamil Nadu pollution Board had ordered a closure of Sterlite's Tuticorin copper smelter plant following reports of poisonous gas leakage.
In today's intrim order the National Green Tribunal ordered formation of a 4 member committee that will inspect the plant. The committee will have a chairman, an expert, one member each from Sterlite and Pollution Control Board of Tamil Nadu. This committee has to submit its report on April 29, when the next hearing will take place.
The tribunal has clearly mentioned that the factory will function only for the purpose of inspection but no production will be allowed. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will supply electricity to the plant only for the purpose of inspection.
Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had ordered closure of the copper smelter after it found more than permissible limit of sulphur dioxide in the air, following complaints of suffocation and dizziness by locals.
The London-based Vedanta group company had however recently got a minor relief when the Supreme Court ruled in favour of company in a 2010 environmental case wherein the company's Tuticorin plant was charged with violating environmental norms.
The apex court had, however, imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on the company for not adhering to the prescribed environmental guidelines.
