Sculley suggests Indians to have big curiosity, willingness to take risks, failing, picking yourself back up and trying again.
He believes if working culture in India improves and people are not penalised for taking risks, it will make India more attractive for entrepreneurs to take a chance..
Below is the verbatim transcript of John Sculley's interview on CNBC-TV18
Q: What is the most common mistake that you have spotted in entrepreneurs?
A: Young entrepreneurs make exactly the same mistake like the one I did. That is, I can do it better myself.
The most important think you have to learn as an entrepreneur is that it is about building a team and recruiting the best people and getting them to believe in what you believe in because entrepreneurs have passion.
Q: You had the privilege of working with Steve Jobs. What drove Steve Jobs to make Apple what it is today?
A: I was with him for three years, seven days a week, till one in the morning. We would walk around for hours up in the hills and not once did he ever talk about making money.
He wanted to make a dent in the universe. He had a noble cause and that was to change the world.
We were working on a Mac-Phone back in late 1984. You couldn't make it, there was no technology to make phones, there were still analog phones in those days and the modems were 300-1200 baud modems and nobody had email, it was a different world and yet Steve was thinking about those types of products back then.
He was rigorous in terms of the discipline of just simplifying and avoiding complexity.
Bill Gates would be down with us a lot. Steve and Bill would argue all the time and I would just be a witness.
Bill was willing to compromise on the products and drove Steve crazy because Bill would just keep writing more and more drivers and would say we will get it right eventually.
Steve was all into product and beautiful design and Bill didn't care what the products looked like and yet they were both right.
Bill built an incredibly successful company and was a genius.
However, both of them saw where the world was going but had different ideas to get there.
Q: Which company do you think has the potential and the promise to be as big as the next Apple or the next Microsoft?
A: Is there anyone out there who is the next Steve Jobs.
Q: Is there anyone close to being Steve Jobs?
A: Jeff Bezos is pretty close. He is very smart, extremely creative and just keeps inventing.
He has basically reinvented the entire way in which commerce is done online.
Q: With regards to India, what are the entrepreneurial ideas that you would like to see and put your money into?
A: I am betting my money on the middle class in India. You can just see the middle class emerging in India however you want to measure, it is big.
Q: What advice would you like to leave them with?
A: Doing the non-obvious, it is about having a big curiosity, willingness to take risks, failing, picking yourself back up and trying again. It is about never giving up. It is about having the passion about something that you really believe in.
So, entrepreneurs they beat to a different drum. Not having role models or enough of them for entrepreneurs locally and not having enough of the culture where you can make mistakes and fail and people won't penalise you for it. If those things are improved, it will make it more attractive for entrepreneurs to take a chance in India.
