Higher taxes in India to impact supercar sales: Singhania

Gautam Singhania, CMD, Raymond who has immense passion for supercars and says the phenomenally high taxes, lack of infrastructure and poor sales service are affecting the sales of supercars in the country.

India is home to barely 250-300 supercars at the moment, and the market is only going to shrink further.

Singhania says duties for supercars at one point were coming down and came down a 110 percent, so the market was growing. However, now the duties have gone up to 174 percent and so, the market for these cars is likely to shrink.

I am nobody to comment what the government does on the duty structure but it is certainly hurting the market, he adds.

Moreover, he says there is also that lack of infrastructure to deal with.

Answering a query on whether he anticipated de-growth in the number of cars or supercars that are purchased in India in 2014 he says, "The number of cars they sell will certainly be less because as it is the economy is tough and then the duties have gone up. All this makes these cars ridiculously expensive."

When asked if service provided by these luxury car makers in India was a key deterrent to buying supercar Singhania says, "I guess it just the mindset. I don't think they have the mindset for service. Some of the top brands in the world just have no idea what they are doing. The local representatives don't give a damn. If you see Ferrari in India, the local representative just doesn't give a damn about the customer."
