Below is the edited transcript of his interview to CNBC-TV18.
Q: The GSM players wanted a piece of the action as far as the 800 Mhz band is concerned? The EGoM has decided against it. So, it's a certain relief for you. However, we saw absolutely no interest, not even an interested bidder in the auction that was concluded recently. What are your expectations going forward?
A: The EGoM has taken a best decision to not mix CDMA 800 MHz spectrum with GSM, because CDMA technology spectrum is a separate spectrum and that was instrumental in bringing the rates down. This spectrum should not be ignored. Somebody who wants to use this spectrum and deliver at cheaper tariffs let it continue. This is absolutely right and referring to TRAI for fixing the price for CDMA spectrum is also a correct decision.
Q: It will be referred to TRAI. We have no immediate news on that. Earlier, Kapil Sibal, the telecom minister, said Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is an outdated technology?
A: I don't think it is outdated. It is outdated technology in the sense that there is no path for growth in that. Currently, there are millions of CDMA users. The claim made by Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), lobby is to get that spectrum into GSM is absolutely incorrect. You can't build a house and then demolish it. I don't agree to that.
