It was a bumper broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum auction, which took place in 2010, but not many players have rolled out services. There are one or two circles in which Bharti has rolled out services. We are yet to see Reliance Infotel, which is the largest BWA spectrum holder, to offer services in any region.
With this decision of the telecom commission, which has to be endorsed by the Telecom Minister now, these companies will be able to offer 4G services. It is a data services at very high speed and it also offers voice services like normal mobile operators.
Now, this is probably going to strengthen the case for BWA spectrum holders. 4G telecom companies might kick-start operations and launch services. The biggest beneficiary of this is going to be Reliance Infotel.
The telecom commission also indicated that in compliance with the Supreme Courts order there is going to be the next round. That will be the third round of 2G spectrum.
This is separate from the previous story. In this round government is going to auction the entire spectrum that was held by quashed telecom licensees. It remains to be seen what is going to be the response that the government is going to receive from this next round of auction.
